The air smells of damp earth and sweet spores, glowing softly beneath a canopy of towering mushrooms. Their caps stretch overhead like stained glass skies, dripping light instead of rain. She stands still, silk skirts brushing moss that hums faintly beneath her feet, feeling the familiar weight of expectation settle on her shoulders. Every path curls back on itself here, winding her deeper into a kingdom built to keep her safe, and still. But her heart pulls beyond the lantern-lit groves and obedient trails. Somewhere past the spore fog and singing roots is a world that does not bow or wait. She closes her eyes, steadying her breath, and listens past the whispers of the land. Tonight, the mushrooms seem to lean away, as if making room. For the first time, escape feels possible.
I started writing The Ranks when I was about fourteen years old, I was sitting at home just trying to think of something to draw. I was scrolling through Pinterest (where you can normally find me) and I came across this girl making a mushroom hat for a ren fair. Obviously it stuck, I ended up making like three of them and becoming obsessed, I studied mushrooms for months just for fun. That's when I started to draw out these characters and making up weird scenarios for them. A long haired blonde princess that was like almost any other, but secretly she was a warrior, and a curly haired knight. Obviously they evolved from their first stand point and way more characters got involved in my story telling. I'd always imagined things differently from other people, I was the weird kid throughout middle school and in high school i had few friends that were actually interested in talking to me.
